David is
Panama's third largest city and the capital of the Chiriqui Providence,
located 40 minutes from the Costa Rican border. It is home to over 100,000
people. We are nearby to shopping and excellent medical facilities with
bilingual doctors, should an emergency arise. Everything you should need
is close by. The local currency is the US dollar, called the Balboa. Don’t
bring many large bills ($50 and up,) as they are difficult to change here,
requiring ID and paperwork. We recommend you bring twenty dollar bills and
smaller. Many of the merchants also accept MC/ Visa and American Express.
The Panamanians are very friendly, wonderful people. They will do just
about anything to help you out if needed. No one will beg you for money or
harass you. Dress the part and respect their culture. Crime here is very
low so don’t be concerned. Our experience here has been wonderful with a
more secure feeling than in most cities statewide. The police are
particularly helpful and friendly here as well. Spanish is the predominant
language in Panama as in all Central American countries. Although it
certainly helps to know some Spanish, many locals here do speak English;
especially merchants, airport personnel and taxi drivers.
